Principal Focus: A Short Interview with Angela Sweeting

Within Oasis Community Learning, we try to encourage our support staff, teachers and leaders to develop their careers as part of our family. Through offering tailored CPD programmes and connecting our Academies as a network of partnerships, fluidity between schools is supported to help our staff grow. Newly appointed as Principal of Oasis Academy Aspinal, Angela Sweeting is a prime example of a strong, successful leader who has built a career in leadership within Oasis.

We recently caught up with Angela to find out more about her background, and what it is she loves that keeps her wanting to stay a part of our family.

When did you first join Oasis? I joined Oasis in March 2014, initially as a class teacher at Oasis Academy Harpur Mount, and was promoted to Assistant Principal in the September. I was also assessment lead and Year 6 Teacher.

What roles have you had that led you to your Principal Position? I worked in a Rochdale school where I was acting Deputy Head teacher, maths lead and SENDCo. I was also a lead maths teacher for Rochdale LA. From there I moved to OAHM. In September 2015 I was seconded to Oasis Academy Fir Vale as Acting Deputy for two terms where I was responsible for assessment, Key Stage 2 and SEN. In March 2016 I was then promoted to Associate Principal at Oasis Academy Aspinal and recently became Principal.

What is your proudest achievement within your career to date? I am proud of being a part of all the schools I have worked for but in particular I think Oasis Academy Fir Vale. Seeing the school go from where it was to where it is now and being a small part of that. It was a very challenging time as the school was in a very difficult place.

What are your aspirations for your role as Principal? To lead Oasis Academy Aspinal to be an outstanding Academy in all areas and for it to be the school of choice in the area it is in.

What is it about your community and Academy that you love the most? I love the children/community and staff, there is a real family feel to the school and a great atmosphere. Everyone supports each other.

Why do you choose work as part of Oasis? Because of the areas the schools are in and the family feel to being a part of the group. There are always supportive staff in all areas of the company.

We wish Angela the best of luck in her new role at Oasis Academy Aspinal, and are all excited to see the great work she will do with her team there.
